The recently passed federal healthcare legislation is a bad deal for individuals and small business owners. Maria Allwine will actively work for and sign into law legislation creating a single public fund using federal, state and local health dollars as well as a progressive tax to fund care for all residents of the state. In Maryland’s single-payer system, each county will use resources of its local health departments for assessing the needs of each county and allow for patient advocacy and education resources and patient input into the system. The California legislature has passed single-payer legislation, but Governor Schwarzenegger has vetoed it. Not Maria Allwine, who knows that a single-payer system will go a long way toward alleviating the severe economic hardship and stress faced by Maryland families because healthcare has become unaffordable and in many significant ways, inaccessible.
